The Bear Sessions: Portraiture
In The Bear Sessions, co-creators Joel Benjamin (photographer) and John O'Connell (producer), seek to explore what constitues authentic, modern masculinity. The project's resulting images of over 80 men from Cape Cod to Texas (and later this year: California) reflect an identity and sexuality not represented in mainstream media. Embracing and presenting their masculinity in unique and individual ways, these members of The Bear Community represent warmth, strength, passion, joy, vulnerability, and most importantly authenticity not represented in Madison Avenue, Hollywood, or iconic gay imagery. In this selection from the project's portraiture, the subjects confidence and self-acceptance encourage the viewer to find an celebrate those qualities within themselves.
